2011 Election: NIGCOMSAT Proposes Modified Secret Balloting System
The NIGCOMSAT has proposed the adoption of a modified secret balloting system in the 2011 general election.
Mr. Ahmed Rufai, Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, made the proposal when he paid a courtesy visit on INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega in Abuja.
He said that NIGCOMSAT has developed a software with features to capture fingerprints and check snatching and stuffing of ballot boxes during election.
Rufai said that the method if adopted would secure the privacy of voters and integrity of votes.
He added that it would reflect the true will of the voters.
“We want a technological solution to the electoral system that is made in Nigeria to face the Nigerian challenges.
“We will involve all the stages of election, from the voter registration to the voting authentication process.
“It also involve the actual voting itself, to the voting collation and the dissemination of the results,’’ he said.
Rufai said the solution could compete with any other solution imported to the country and was ideal for Nigeria’s electoral process.
On the uncostitutionality of the electronic voting system, Rufai said the process which might not be adopted immediately could take a gradual process for future elections.
“Even if the law does not permit electoral voting system now, it may permit it in future.
“You may not just adopt new things immediately, it must take a gradual process,” he added.
