Don Identifies Antidotes To Hunger, Malnutrition In Africa

By JUDE EHEBHA

AS a way of fighting hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria and Africa continent, a university don, Prof. Abraham Onigbinde has called for increased broadcast air time to scientific education on food and health.

He equally advocated for the invigoration and implementation of the school lunch policy of the past federal government at all public and private primary schools in Nigeria.

Prof. Onigbinde who was speaking while delivering the 36th Inaugural Lecture Series of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma entitled: Out of the Garden of Eden: Biochemical Pathway last week, lamented that less than 0.1 per cent of air time was dedicated to health talk on Nigerian Radio and Television stations, while such messages were framed for the commercial interest of the sponsors in some others.

According to the professor, the increment in air time would infuse in the populace, the act of scientific thinking.

The inaugural lecturer explained that invigoration of school lunch would provide jobs for millions of people that would be involved in the preparation and supervision, and training for the programme.

He was also of the opinion that deliberate efforts must be made to add value to the traditional food processing, packaging and presentation, to meet the challenges of the modern values and taste in global food village.

Prof. Onigbinde similarly wanted efforts to be made to promote the utilization of locally available foods, just as he asked that education on it, based on scientific findings should be incorporated into the curriculum of General Studies in every tertiary institution in the country.
