IN the political history of Nigeria, year 2010 shall not be forgotten in a hurry. There might be mixed feelings to this nevertheless, it was in year 2010 that Nigeria lost one of its finest President who enthroned peace, law & order, justice and equity in our polity. Late President Umaru Musa Yar Adua was that gentleman.
Yar Adua’s demise brought untold pains not only to his immediate family but to the whole nation who saw through him and his able Vice President, the light of a better Nigeria. Surely, we will miss him but we take consolation on the facts that the Almighty God has so decided and his then Vice President, who now has taken over the mantle of leadership, as divinely arranged by God, is religiously carrying on with the good works to directly better the lots of the average Nigerian.
There was something I noticed during Mr. President’s recent visits to some states of the Federation and that once again reaffirm my faith in the present crop of leadership.
First, I noticed during Mr. President’s visit to Akwa Ibom State, couple of days ago, a continuation of governance in terms of projects started by the former Governor, Victor Attah and total completion of same projects by the present Governor, His Excellency Chief Godswill Akpabio. I also noticed with excitement same in Rivers State, the Treasure Base of the Nation, where His Excellency Rt. Hon. Chibuike Ameachi completed projects initiated by his predecessor.
How about Govs Sylva Timipre, Emmanuel Uduaghan and Liyel Imoke of Bayelsa, Delta and Cross River State respectively, same feat was recorded and this by my reasoning is a clear indicator of a true and good democracy that brings its dividends to the people.
Another point of note is the uniqueness of the practice of democracy by the South South Governors and the economic role and sustenance part resources from the region have played for decades now, in furthering the unity and stability of our beloved country.
In spite of the degradation of our environment that have impoverished our people, and have led to the lost of millions of lives as a result of the activities of oil companies operating in the region without a commensurate compensation to the people, the South South have been and still the financial and economic strength/base on which the entire Nigeria nation feeds yet not so much to show for it and yet we still remain committed to the progress and oneness of this great country.
Do you want to know a people that believe in the unity and stability of this nation? Then go to the South South people.
Now year 2011 is by the corner and very soon campaigns for elective offices will commence in full force at all levels of Government. A careful look at the history of Nigeria clearly shows that the people of Nigeria gave political powers to those with economic powers. Remember the era of cocoa and groundnut oil? I am sure we do!
The South South people might not be asking too much if they for once present themselves to be elected to the office of the President. The decision of Monday 26/7/2010 in Port Harcourt, the Garden City by Stakeholders and Governors of the South South zone declaring to throw their weights behind the candidacy of His Excellency, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR) is a right step in the right direction.
And I make bold to say that history will remember these Governors for good for this selfless act, which represent the yearnings of the Niger Delta people in particular and well meaning Nigerians in general.
Let’s remember that Jonathan’s ascendancy to the Presidency is divine even as the yearnings by the people of Nigeria (both from the North and West) for his Excellency to declare, contest for the position of the President and continue with the good works are clear indication of the will of God to change the tide towards the betterment of the Nigerian people.
The South South is ready to take Nigeria to the next positive level of monumental development of basic infrastructure, steady power supply, improved standard of education and better administration of the abundant human and natural resources in our great country Nigeria.
Fellow Nigerians let’s all give our support for Mr. President (Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR) to continue with his laudable programmes in power come 2011.
