Nigerians are in high expectations of what the new year 2012 has to offer, this is perhaps the right attitude , because every new year brings hope, particularly when the preceding year was devastating, frustrating and calamitous for many Nigerians who faced hunger, deprivation, unemployment, sickness and many more.
President Goodluck Jonathan has set the ball rolling as he has assured Nigerians of improved living conditions and security of lives and property in 2012 and beyond. In his new year address he further urged the people not to lose hope because of current challenges facing the nation and that his government will intensify efforts to ensure the safety of lives and property.
The Nigerian observer notes that the government is the driver of the economy, while private sector input is inevitable and plays a significant role, government policies and regulations that are brought on stream invariably alters and shapes economic activities in all their ramifications. That is why it is not unusual for economic experts and business oriented persons to study government trends and know which direction government is headed.
It is therefore imperative for the weak of the society, particularly, the deprived such as the unemployed and weak earners in government employment to look ahead for government’s olive branch to live a meaningful life. With removal of fuel subsidy, the weak in the society is further challenged in his ability to meet his socio-economic goals.
Therefore, the Nigerian observer implores the administration of President Jonathan in its avowed commitment to better the lives of people to not only fulfill its transformation programmes but to deal decisively with issues that affect the people.
The Nigerian observer notes that the preceding year was inundated with the issues of peace and security occasioned by the activities of the Boko Haram religious sect with bombings of land mark institutions and notable establishments including churches, with the latest incident in Madalla, Niger State claiming over 40 lives.
The religious and tribal war that plagued parts of Jos in Plateau State should not be allowed to recur while national co-existence should be strenuously pursued.
However, in Edo state the Comrade Governor, Adams Oshiomhole has left indelible marks in the annals of governance in the State as the level of infrastructure has significantly improved and the effect of good and positive governance is visible everywhere, more importantly many youths have been empowered and given employment through the Youth Empowerment the Scheme(YES).
Besides, the Comrade governor is the first to implement the new minimum wage and with his proactive governance which is development and people oriented the people are ready to give him the much needed support.
Against this background, the Nigerian observer urges governments at both the federal and state levels to fulfill their electoral promises to the people as th form the bed rock of good governance and visible indices of development.
