Be Guided By Your Conscience During Elections
- Onaiyekan Urges Nigerians

Archbishop John Onaiyekan, President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), on Tuesday said Nigerians should be guided by their conscience in the forthcoming elections.

“It is not about Anambra elections alone, but elections in Nigeria generally; that those in charge should ensure that we allow a situation whereby all Nigerians would be allowed to freely choose their representatives,” he said at a news conference in Abuja.

“People should know that they cannot get God’s blessings with the way they go about things when it concerns elections.

“But, when you look at the fact that Anambra State has Christians in the majority, and that almost all the candidates in the election are Catholics, I can only ask them about what they are doing.

“As Christians, they should search their conscience, and ask themselves what they are really doing to bring about a positive change in Nigeria,’’ he said.

He prayed for the leaders to guide the country aright.

He also called for more prayers for President Umaru Yar’Adua’s quick recovery.

“In any case, we should have somebody in charge, somebody taking decisions. As it is now we are all suffering for it. It is affecting us in the way the outside world see us,’’ he said.

Mr Mike Reis, President of the Catholic Association of Media Professionals in Abuja, said the forum would be regular in order to help the archdiocese make more contributions to national growth.

“Henceforth this kind of forum will be regular in order to ensure that the archdiocese not only affect the lives of its members, but also make more impact on national life,’’ he said.
