THE main bowl of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, will get a facelift with the installation of an astro turf, the Edo Deputy Governor, Dr Pius Odubu, has disclosed.

Odubu said this when he received members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) on Thursday in Benin.

He said provision for the installation of the turf was made in the state budget for 2010, adding that Gov. Adams Oshiomhole was committed to development of sports in the state.

The deputy governor said the government’s commitment to sports was recently demonstrated when it released N50 million to Bendel Insurance FC for the team’s league campaign. He said the government was determined to develop sports at all levels, including educational institutions.

Earlier, Ben Ogbemudia, the SWAN Chairman, urged the government to do more for sports in the state.

He said priority should be accorded to sports in schools as talents abound in educational institutions and assured the government of the association’s preparedness to partner with it to enhance sports in Edo.
