For The Love Of Girl-Child

With Gloria Omoruyi

Have you ever bothered to ask why women have preference for a female child – There are only two major reasons – To weave and adorn the hair of the girl-child with beads and other hair decorations and to buy beautiful female dresses for them as women tend to have varieties of styles you can ever imagine compared with the boy child whose style does not go beyond the conventional shirt and trouser. So no matter the number of boys a woman has, she is never satisfied until she gives birth to a girl-child. The third reason which may not be immediate and which is considered as natural is the fact that a female child is good at taking care of the home. She is on ground to cook, wash, and assist the mother in the kitchen, compared to a male-child who only takes delight in eating and playing football.
The two major reasons as I said earlier, is to have a child that they would adorn their hair with beautiful hairstyles and beautiful clothes.

You need to see the expression of joy and delight on the faces of yet-to-be mothers and the ones that are yet to have a girl-child when they see female clothes on display. Some are even tempted to buy hoping that when they give birth to a child, it would turn out a girl-child. Some are lucky, it turns out to be a girl, but some are not, it turns out to be a boy-child. Don’t be surprise at times you see a boy-child putting on a female attire – it is the hand work of the mother who desperately needs a girl-child. Mothers love beautiful hair-styles and clothes for their girl-child.

If you were opportuned to visit New Benin Market and Lagos Street Market in Benin City few days before the Christmas celebration, you would have experienced the human traffic. Apart from the clothes shop, the major attention was the weave-on shops where women were busy making their choice from the assorted array of beads and other hair decorations and attachments. They were all scrambling to buy as if tomorrow will never come.

At every salon one pays a visit to, you are bound to see 4-5 girls mostly children waiting to take turns with their parents waiting at the corner. I had to change my mind about the style of hair I was going to do because of the number of children on ground. They all had the same hair style in mind-beaded hair style.

At every street you enter, you see the little children, with their hair adorn with beads. It was really a beauty to behold. For once mothers did not mind the cost of attachment, beads, and weave-on which the sellers sold at a higher rate compared to the ordinary season when people do not rush to buy from them. All they wanted was to see their children’s hair looking beautiful and attractive.

The salon owners too capitalized on the season to step up their prices. Customers had no choice, for they cannot afford to leave their hair as well as their children’s hair unkempt.

The only problem was the way some mothers were forcing their children to go through the ordeal of weaving their hair. Did I say ordeal? Yes! It was quite an ordeal for the little children who were not comfortable at all as their hair were being done.

Some wailed and cried their hearts out, but the mothers did not pay attention to them. All they wanted was to see their children parading a beautiful hairstyle during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The young and older women were also looking bright and beautiful in their various hairstyles. The young girls reminded me of a saying that men do not get married during the Christmas celebration as it is very difficult to make a choice. The beautiful clothes and shoes, the hair-styles would transform even the ugliest looking girl to a beautiful angel.

So a man who wants to marry a girl should wait patiently until the celebration is over in order to make a right choice. How true? I am sure this obtains in the past, not this modern time when women in general take time out to look good all the time.

Infact women will not stop at anything to look beautiful these days.
