ABUJA-The Sapele Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, has expressed its desire to purchase the Sapele Power Station in response to the Federal Government’s plans to fully privatise the PHCN.
The President of the Chamber, Chief David Iweta, told newsmen in Abuja that the chamber was willing to buy the power station if the Federal Government wished to perfect its plans to sell power stations as reported in various newspapers.
He said the chamber had written a letter to that effect to the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, conveying the wishes of the people of Sapele and Okpe Communities, industrialists and stakeholders to express “our irrevocable interest to purchase the Sapele Power Station.
“By the expression of interest, Sapele Chamber of Commerce, Investment arm should be given the first right of refusal.
“As you maybe aware, Youths in the area have persistently obstructed easy flow of gas through the pipelines to the plants over the years,’’ he said.
According to him, with the purchase of the power station by the Sapele Community where they are stakeholders, there will be no doubt that consistent supply of gas to the station will be guaranteed.
Iweta said that the Chamber intended to incorporate members of the community into the core investing group.
He said the chamber had concluded plans to raise funds from both local and foreign sources and had identified highly experienced energy professionals to position as core investors to purchase the station.
He said this would ensure the provision of regular energy requirement to the national grid.
“It is worthy of mention that the Delta State Government is willing to partner with the chamber in our acquisition of the power station.
“We, hereby, request the Federal Government to make available to the Sapele Chamber of Commerce the terms and conditions for the sale of the power plant for our necessary action,’’ he said.
