ABUJA-Approximately 65 tonnes of obsolete pesticides were gathered across the 36 states and the FCT, Mr. Theodore Nwaokwe, the former Project Coordinator, Nigeria-African Stockpile Programme, has said.
Nwaokwe disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Abuja.
He said that 1.8 tonnes of contaminated equipment and 1.7 tonnes of empty containers were also verified during the inventory of obsolete pesticides stockpile in the country.
“Nigeria now has the knowledge of the quantity of obsolete pesticides. Our aim and objective is to identify obsolete pesticides in the country and ways to dispose of them,” he said.
The former coordinator said that the obsolete pesticides stock were being safeguarded states where they were collected due to threat they posed to human health and the environment.
He also said that the inventory was aimed at reducing the obsolete pesticides stock in the country.
According to him, the project has promoted “sound” pesticide management in the areas of pesticides use, distribution and handling, as sensitisation programmes were conducted at various levels in the states.
