2011: Utomi harps on vibrant opposition

By QUEENETH AIKHIONBARE

BENIN CITY – The Protem National Chairman of the Social Democratic Mega Party (SDMP), Prof. Pat Utomi has stressed the need for a vibrant opposition that is based on ideology and commitment to the service of the people.

This, he said would ensure that politicians focus on the people as well as job creation, which would in turn create wealth and opportunities in a broad manner to lift Nigerians up.

Prof. Utomi bared his mind yesterday at the Benin Airport, during a brief stop over enroute Delta State.

While explaining that the Social Democratic Mega Party to which he belongs has been striving hard to be that opposition, Prof. Utomi added that he has been working closely with the Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in consultation with people in the opposition who are public office holders.

The presidential aspirant equally disclosed that in the next one month, two very important meetings would be held in Benin, adding that the first will be a meeting of progressive governors and other progressives who are public office holders; to put together an agenda geared towards service to the people.

Secondly, Chief Anthony Enahoro will be holding a meeting of all leading opposition members here in Benin City.

Prof. Utomi stated that after this, Nigerians will no longer be orphans.
In his words: “Nigerians are orphans now because we don’t have a political clout that is zealous”.

Prof. Utomi was accompanied at the airport by Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director, African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) and Osagie Ayanru, a candidate for Huntington city council.

Similarly, Prof. Pat Utomi has urged Nigerians to vote candidates that demonstrate good understanding of national issues.

Utomi told newsmen in Lagos yesterday, that such candidates must also have concern for social conscience and a track record of service to their community.

The SDMP Chairman said citizens should kick against politicians or candidates who fail to focus on issues of creating economic growth, social harmony and rebuilding the nation’s challenged institutions.
