Remembering Names

By O. C MADU

One of the first lessons a politician learns is this: "To recall a voter's name is statesmanship. To forget is oblivion," says Roosevelt. And the ability to remember names is almost as important in business and social contacts as it is in politics. Napoleon the Third, Emperor of France and nephew of the great Napoleon, boasted that inspite of all his royal duties he could remember the name of every person he met. His technique? Simple. If he didn't hear the name distinctly, he said, so "sorry. I did not get the name clearly". Then, if it was an unusual name, he would say "How is it spelt?

The Need To Police Your Vote

By EFOSA KAYODE IYASERE

Development ought to be the right of the electorate and citizens. I n a democratic settings, its not what you beg for but what the elected leaders do because its their responsibility to serve the people and in serving the people they provide for them all the basic needs and necessity that would make life meaningful. But in our present generation, development has become what the electorate beg for from the leaders who are in office not to serve them but to serve themselves, their families and pocket as such neglecting the basic need that would have improve the lives of the people they ought to serve and protect.

Before now, development was far from the people of Edo State as previous administration have neglected the people of the state as looking became the game of our looting became the game of our leader and the electorate and citizens of the state were worst hit by the decay in the system.

But the comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s administration restored the hope of the people and also the lost glory of the state which is term “heart beat” of the nation. The heart almost stopped beating due to neglect from previous administration but stopped the present administration revived it and its now functioning well again and the evidence is there for all to see.

The present administration led by the people’s governor Adams Oshiomhole came on board after claiming the stolen mandate and embarked on massive development to the surprise and shock of everyone. The previous administration made the people to believe that development is not possible but the comrade governor kept his words as all the 18 Local Government Council in the State are benefiting from the development project of the comrade governor.

Benin City (ancient city) has taken a new look and can not be reoffered to as ancient city anymore due to the modern and breath taken development going on there. The State is now a point of call and a role model for other state seeking for development.

Oshiomhole came and promised the people that he will perform and that his social contract with them is to massively develop the State and make the State envy of all, true to his word he has done well as an average Edo man I s proud to come from the State.

The governor collect tax from the people and truly put the money to use and this has result to transformation of the State thereby resulted to transformation of the State thereby fulfilling and keeping to his words this shows that he can truly be trusted for he has shown that development is possible in the State and the time for sharing the money has passed now is the time to work.

The determination of governor has transformed the State in terms of development, transparency, accountability, justice and good governance. He has brought governance closer to the people. The governor has brought the greatest number of happiness to the greater number of the people of the State.

Due to the performance of the people’s governor, the people are now resolute to ensure that the second term bid of the governor is successful in other for him to continue with his good work.

As a person, I carry out political research to know and get the opinion of the people based on the performance of the present administration as such, I enter comrade bus with the people and try to feel the impulse of the people, its so wonderful to hear what the people says about the present administration. This people are the electorate and shows that the people appreciate the contribution of the comrade governor to the development of the State and the citizens.

From my research I have discovered that we must now begin to devote our attention to areas of policing our vote. It is clear that the governor has been endorsed by the Edo people because they know the trauma they have passed through before his emergence.

In the State we have agent of mal-administration who are bent on distracting the focus of the government and slow down the progress in the state. These agents might want to revive the machinery of rigging I other to steal the mandate once again, but we must work on this areas and ensure that it does not happen again.
We must begin to educate our people and focus on educating the electorate on electoral process and how to vote, defend your vote. Focus should be on the area of organizing human capacity building at the level of the Civil Society Organization. The education need to be massive as it will help to waken the consciousness of the people and sensitize them on the need to police and protect their vote so that their vote will count.

Research shows that in the last election, it was not up to 50 percent that actually came out to cast their vote as such we should educate the people of the need to exercise their political franchise. The more the people come out to vote, the more the government see it as a responsibility to serve them better.

The era of subverting democratic process is gone; we should not allow inducement and sell their vote because their vote can be what is needed to make the difference. The press should be partners in progress in educating the people as this happens, institutions are been built and foundation for better governance laid.

Oshiomhole has shown that he is a true leader of the people, a leader that means well for the people. Due to the good heart of the comrade governor he introduce palliative measures to reduce the burden of the oil subsidy removal on the people of the State. This is governance, the governor is working to improve the lives of the people of the State. Oshiomhole has shown that democracy is when the people rule themselves by themselves.

The Oshiomhole administration is gender sensitive, he does not discriminate against women as such created room in his cabinet for women and also appoints large number of women as Senior Special Assistant (SSA). He has also given women appointment in other committee here and there. In terms of appointing women in his government, he has done well and will even do better in his second term in office. The governor must be commended for the various appointment.
