Remembering Names

By O. C MADU

One of the first lessons a politician learns is this: "To recall a voter's name is statesmanship. To forget is oblivion," says Roosevelt. And the ability to remember names is almost as important in business and social contacts as it is in politics. Napoleon the Third, Emperor of France and nephew of the great Napoleon, boasted that inspite of all his royal duties he could remember the name of every person he met. His technique? Simple. If he didn't hear the name distinctly, he said, so "sorry. I did not get the name clearly". Then, if it was an unusual name, he would say "How is it spelt?

The End Shall Tell

By RACHEL UGBODAGA

Here comes the story of a certain couple who were joined together for five years without seed (no issue). On a faithful day, the couple: Mr. and Mrs. Ogege were both jugging when they came across a baby girl Wrapped in a blue wrapper in a Corner. She was very beautiful because her lips were as reddish as a rose; eyes were glooming love like pick me if you can. The couple wondered on what would have happened to the parents of the poor innocent child. They had pity on the child and decided to pick her up; unknowingly to them that the little child’s mother was watching the scene from another Corner because she was not financially buoyant to take responsibility of her child since her husband had denied her of the baby because of her red lips and green eyes.

The baby grew as a young beautiful girl and she was named diamond by Mr. and Mrs Ogege. When diamond was two years old, Mrs. Ogege took in and gave birth to her first child in a nearby hospital. When her husband got the news, he leaped for joy. Together with diamond, he had an accident trying to cross the road in haste. Immediately,, Mrs. Ogege heard this, she though that diamond was the cause of her husband’s death. She found it difficult to believe that her husband didn’t cross the road well-soon, she developed hatred for diamond and maltreated her so badly while she handled her daughter “Angel” with the do as you like method. Angel grew up as a way — ward girl who lived a useless life.

After l3 years, it was time to write their final examination for all the years in the secondary school. Meanwhile, diamond’s real mother had become a family friend to Mrs. Ogege’s family already. As Angel lived a wayward life. She had always warned and cautioned diamond about the facts of life. She has been responsible for Angel’s up — keep and every other thing.

About a month to the final examination, Angel went out clubbing with her friends. Just a week to the examination, she found out that she was sick. She was coughing and vomiting all sorts of things including blood. She needed money to go to the hospital so; she had to steal her mothers’ money. The accusation finger was pointed at diamond and she was beaten mercilessly — three days to their final exams, she went to the hospital for test and it was confirmed that she had cancer of the lungs and she was pregnant. To cripple facts for her, she didn’t know who was responsible for it. When she found out in just two days to the examination that she took so much pain in breathing, she and her friend decided to make a new turn by reaching a traditional doctor who prescribed her to three different concoctions at once. He asked them to give him two days to prepare the native medicines.

Finally, the day of the examination approached Angel wasn’t herself in the examination hall. She submitted and went to the baba’s place to take her concoctions. Then, she returned home and wasn’t asked by her mother why she wasn’t in the exam hall. Suddenly, she started coughing and vomiting blood again. After two (2) minutes, she kicked the bucket. When diamond returned home later on that tragedic day she met a lot of people including Mrs. Ogege weeping bitterly with Angel’s, body lying lifeless on the floor. Still, Mrs. Ogege remained wicked to diamond. This provoked her real mother to come out and claim her child back. It was deemed to Mrs. Ogege that she had lost everything.

The hour of reckoning came when everyone was present to check his/her result. Diamond and her real mother were there including Angel’s mother who was also there to check her daughters paper. Diamond had all papers and was qualified to read law in the University while Angel’s paper were not seen. Then Mrs. Ogege came into conclusion saying loud to herself that “the end shall tell”.
