DR John Aremu of the Infectious Disease Unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, has advised Nigerians to drink minimum of three litres of water in a day to avoid dehydration.
He told newsmen in an interview on Friday in Gombe that drinking enough water can protect the human body and prevent loss of fluid particularly during the dry season.
According to Aremu, drinking enough water is necessary because people sweat a lot and lose fluid during the dry season.
“It is advisable for everybody during this period to drink a lot of water; at least everybody should not drink anything less than three litres per day.”
Aremu said that it was very important to always take precautionary measures in order to avoid any problem.
“The more you lose fluid, the more concentrated your urine is and the more likely you get renal stone.’’
According to him, the dry period comes with health challenges and that some challenges can be averted while some required medical advice.
He said that during the dry season, there could be the likelihood of outbreak of Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (CSM), hence the need to take precautionary measures to reduce the problems associated with such seasons.
“The reason why it is more prevalent during heat (dry) period is that many people sleep together, especially those ones that sleep in a congress setting and in this part of the country, especially the almajiri system.’’
