SUSPECTED armed robbers on Friday invaded two banks within the Ajaokuta Steel Complex in Kogi, killed a medical doctor in the process and injured many others, sources said.
Report had it that the suspects had, on their way to the banks at about 1a.m, damaged the police station at the nearby Geregu village with grenades and thereafter demobilised the policemen on duty.
Sources said the hoodlums headed for a branch of UBA Plc, blew up the Automated Teller Machine and carted away an unspecified sum.
Report had it that the robbers operated unchallenged for more than 30 minutes and made unsuccessful attempts to break into other banks.
A medical doctor identified as Dr Ameh, was allegedly shot while he was returning home from duty at the company clinic.
He was believed to have been hit by stray bullets from the suspects, while they were attempting to rob a branch of Ecobank within the complex.
Some staff of the Ajaokuta Steel Company, who came out to see what was happening, were allegedly injured and receiving treatment in hospital.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ajayi Okansanmi, confirmed the incident but said a team of policemen, led by the Commissioner of Police in Kogi, Mr Marvel Akpoyibo, foiled the robbery attack.
“Yes the incident occurred but our men were able to give them a fight. Let us say their attempt was foiled,” he said.
The incident raised fears among banks in Lokoja, which is about 25 minutes drive to Ajaokuta.
The banks, which had opened for business at 8a.m hurriedly shut for about two hours and later opened their doors to customers at about 11a.m.
