A mobile court for traffic offenders has been set up in Benin City. The court which was set up on Thursday at the Benin/Lagos tollgate to enforce and prosecute traffic offenders on the use of defective wipers, worn-out tyres, excessive speed violation and overloading swung swiftly into action by prosecuting one Emmanuel Onyemauche and fined him N2,500 for not making use of a seat belt.
A commuter, Adolphus Duru was also arrested and prosecuted on a two count charge of overloading and not having a fire extinguisher. Moses Agboh was prosecuted for over loading and road obstruction while a bike man was also fined N2000 for driving without a helmet.
The prosecuted traffic offenders had an option of fine or going to prison.
Daneji Baffa the Assistant Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) stated that the mobile court was set up to prosecute “Lawless and recalcitrant drivers”.
As a first step towards eradication of traffic violation the Federal Road Safety Commission he stated went about doing a public enlightenment before going into the enforcement process in collaboration with the state government in order to convince drivers at the scene of crime that they are truly at fault and placed with an option of fine or going to jail.
Commercial vehicles operating within the Benin Metropolis seem to be complying with the government prescribed colour code for all commercial vehicles operating within Edo State as they now wear the red and yellow colours.
Though there was a LULL in vehicular movement as the law ordering commercial vehicles to comply with the new colour code became enforceable as more commercial vehicles are becoming visible on road networks in Benin City.
At the Ramat Park, there was pushing, shoving and cursing as passengers scrambled to enter available commercial buses. The ever busy ring-road had a moderate density of commercial vehicles.
At the Wire and the Uselu-Lagos Roads, Compliant Commercial vehicles could be seen though their number was on the low side.
