KADUNA - African leaders have been advised to avail themselves of credible elections in their respective countries, to trigger off national development.
This can be done by ensuring credibility through national elections conducted by unfettered independent national electoral body involving all the political parties, candidates, politicians and electorates to ensure credible beginning with their voices heard as well as provision of level playing ground for all.
Ghana’s Deputy Information Minister, Honourable Samuel Ablakwa said at the West African Students Union (WASU) 2009 Annual Award, that only Africans are in the best position to save and develop Africa for the benefit of its people.
Honourable Samuel Ablakwa in his paper “Credible Election Bedrock for National Development,” debunked the insinuation that there can not be credible elections in Africa which is not a “rocket task,” but a thing we can do because elections in Africans are not expected to be fraught with box snatchers, magic announcement and announcers but for the greed that has engulfed our politicians who see themselves as the only good people to lead or govern.
“Fake politicians are richer than their country because of the illegal wealth they have amassed,” the Minister declared; emphasizing that ‘’it is time we make sure that we avail ourselves of the best politicians available,” while we ensure that dynasties are not allowed any role in conducting elections as well as elections should not be conducted in places that have falling short of truth.
He called for the development of political consciousness in Africa as checks against our leaders who are negative to avoid influencing the electorates.
He assured that Africa shall get to its desired political statute through genuine reforms which do not side track any group and ensuring that the national elections remain on one man, one vote; calling on Africans to brand any country that is badly governed with poverty taking its toll on the people but is rich as a “disgrace.”
He said that although Ghana is seen as one of the exemplary, thriving good democracy in Africa, it is not complacent about it because the youths are still pressing for a better sanitised electoral system with many of them now involved in politics.
Also in his paper; “Democracy Free and Security” by Head of Political Department, Ghana University, Legon Dr. Kumi Ansa-Koi in reeling out points to brood on, noted that Africa’s present stance does not provide room for merry as poverty is daily getting worse its grip on the people.
Dr. Kumi Ansa-Koi lamented that inspite of the truth that Africa is rich and most blessed among its contemporary continents, we are still immensed in the mysterious cry and paradox of a rich but poor content, and called on our leaders to immediately address the situation to reverse it.
