NLC Advises Imo Govt On Tax

OWERRI- NLC has advised Imo against imposing heavy taxes on the proposed 15 per cent salary increase for workers in the state.

Mr. Isidore Opara, State Chairman of NLC, told newsmen in Owerri that imposition of heavy taxes would make the salary increase meaningless.

The proposed salary increase, he said, had lingered for four months, and explained that the government and labour have resolved the impasse with the signing of an agreement.

He said three contentious issues (rent, utility and furniture allowances) had been resolved with the government.

The labour leader said they asked for 50 per cent increase in rent subsidy but the government offered 40 per cent and 10 per cent for utility against the 15 the labour asked for.

Opara said the labour could not reach an agreement with government on the furniture allowance, but the issue had been differed.

Opara said with the new salary package, it would cost the government N380 million to pay salaries monthly as against N200 million.

He said the heavy taxes on the salary would seriously affect the take home pay if the issue was not properly trashed out.

He said an agreement had been signed for the removal of the Board of Internal Revenue’s Chief Executive and the Head of Service had been mandated to correct the distortion on the salary table.
