CONGA Sets Up Anti Piracy Committee

By ELIZABETH AGBOEGBULEM

LAGOS - The coalition of Nollywood Guilds and Associations (CONGA) has set up a committee to evolve a multi-faceted approach to tackling piracy.

Mr Emma Isikaku, Vice Chairman of CONGA, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.

CONGA, which was formed on August lasy year, comprises all the guilds and associations in the movie industry.

It was aimed at carrying out programmes and actions that would promote standard in Nollywood.

Isikaku, also the President, Film/Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN), told newsmen that the seven-man anti-piracy committee would lay emphasis on internet piracy.

“The quantity of movies pirated via the internet is much higher compared with what is locally pirated,’’ he said.

Isikaku said that CONGA was planning to improve its business relationship with operators of cable television networks such as HITV, M-Net and Terrestrial TV to increase their contributions to the Nigerian movie industry.

He alleged that the M-Net and DSTV had not contributed much to the Nigerian film industry when compared with their contributions to other African countries including South Africa and Tanzania.

‘‘Here in Nigeria, movies are shown 24 hours on the cables with little or nothing for the copyright owners to show for it,’’ he said.

He expressed the hope that CONGA would be a veritable tool for realising the dreams of a virile and sustainable motion picture industry in Nigeria.

Isikaku urged all Nigerians to be involved in the fight against piracy by refusing to buy pirated movies as well as reporting suspected pirates to the relevant authorities.
