BENIN CITY – Edo State House of Assembly has decried the spate of armed robbery incidents in the state particularly in Owan West and East Local Government Areas.
The House condemned in strong terms the recent robbery incident that claimed the lives of three innocent citizens of the area, noting that the event of the last four months in the two councils left much to be desired.
Brought under matters of urgent public importance, the member representing Owan East Constituency at the Parliament, Hon. Fred Omoigberai said that the two councils had been under siege since the past four weeks, following the activities of hoodlums.
Hon. Omoigberai further stated that he had privileged information that some of the robbers were from neighbouring Ondo State, and have insiders who fed them with information as well as prepare base for them to carry out their nefarious activities.
According to him, “some arrested armed robbers among the gang have made confessional statements to the police to the effect that they have some of their gangs in Ifon, Ondo State”.
The lawmaker therefore urged the parliament to join him and the people of his constituency to condemn the dastardly acts which had so far claimed the lives of five persons including two of the gang members.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Zakawanu Garuba urged the Nigeria Police and other security agencies in the state to be alive to their responsibilities, especially in these ‘ember’ months, saying that there was need for tighter security measures at the state border towns, particularly in Owan West and East Local Government areas of the state which had a common boundary with Ondo State.
Also yesterday, the House confirmed the appointments of two members of the state Universal Basic Education Board (UBE) to replace the two that were earlier disqualified by the parliament.
The two confirmed members are Professor (Mrs.) Philomena Ejielemen Alli, chairman and Chief Matthew Enokhuoma who is a member of the Board.
Meanwhile, the Edo State House of Assembly has passed the Bill for a law to establish the Edo state Road Maintenance Agency.
The Bill which is a statutory creation of the state was passed after the committee of the whole House completed consideration on the adjourned debate of the Bill.
