BENIN CITY-The Grand Finale of the first ever quiz competition amongst public Junior Secondary Schools in Edo State took place in Benin City yesterday with Iduwele Junior Secondary School, Irrua, emerging as the over-all state champions.
The Edo Central Senatorial representatives garnered a total of 18 points to clinch the giant gold trophy and cash prize, while the 2nd position went to Oredo Junior Girls School, Benin City, representing Edo South with 16 points. Edo North representatives, Holy Trinity Grammar School, Sabongida — Ora clinched the 3rd position with 12 points.
Earlier in her address, the Commissioner for Basic Education, Barrister Uyi Ogbemudia, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Paul Osaghae, stated that her Ministry was finding ways of getting students more committed to their studies, so they could improve on their academic performance, She expressed hope that the competition would help to arouse students’ interest in studying and minimize their involvement in unproductive and unwholesome behaviour.
The commissioner asserted that the competition would be extended to include private junior secondary schools in subsequent editions.
Also in her remarks, the Director, School Services, Ministry of Basic Education, Mrs. A.B. Oiboh, admonished the students to take their studies seriously so that they could be responsible citizens in future. She commended Zenith Bank, Sponsors of the competition for their kind initiative and expressed optimism that the partnership between the Ministry and the Bank would be sustained.
The occasion was graced by parents, students, teachers, representatives of Zenith Bank and stakeholders in the education sector, from within and outside Edo State.
