LAGOS- Any lingering doubt about the survival of scrabble as an organised sport in Nigeria was laid to rest last weekend when the curtain fell on the 2nd Godswill Akpabio International Classics.
The Uyo tournament not only assumed an international dimension with the participation of some foreign players, notably from Ghana and the U.K. but the matches were also played at the serene Le Meridien Ibom Hotels and Golf Resort.
Akwa Ibom Governor, Akpabio, made it unique by participating in the championship and challenged public office seekers to play the game because of its intellectual demands required for governance.
The championship, which featured 184 players, also served as the final selection trial of the Nigerian team expected to take part in the African championship in Kenya later this week.
The opening ceremony at the serene Marina waterfront overlooking the Wanniba Lagoon, and the gala night that featured all the prominent indigenes, politicians and captains of industry in the state, were highly remarkable.
