For Nigeria’s Sport To Move Forward: Allow Sports Technocrats Be At Helm Of Affairs -Sec, Edo Refs Council

By NICHOLAS EBOIGBE

BENIN CITY - The Secretary of Edo State Referees Council, Johnbull Okundolor has posited that Nigeria can only develop and win more medals in future Olympics if good sports technocrats are allowed to handle the administration of sports in the country.

According to Okundolor “People who knows sports should be made to administer sports in this country. They should occupy strategic positions and not those who do not have any knowledge of sports.”

The Edo Referees scribe further suggested that the country should ensure that a retired sportsman be Minister for Sports.

It is the professional sportsman who understands sports that knows what to do to win medals in the Olympics and not somebody from other fields of human endeavour.

Also, he recommends that the Federal government fund sporting activities if the nation must make the desired progress.

He said Federal Government should encourage corporate bodies to fund sports.
‘The Federal Government should tax corporate bodies at it is done in European nations to assist in funding of sports.”

He regretted that Nigeria went to the Beijing Olympics with a contingent of 155 which was the largest from Africa yet they failed to make mark in the summer games.

“We took only football team to the Olympics, others did not prepare well In the case of boxing, their chairman said the boxers did not go for training tour for exposure. “Okundolor enthused.
