DR. Promise Okoro, a lecturer at the University of Abuja, on Thursday urged Nigerians and Africans to pray for U.S. Democratic Presidential hopeful Barak Obama to win the Nov. 4 election.
The presidential election is between Obama and Mr John McCain, the Republican party candidate.
Okoro made the call in an interview with the newsmen in Abuja on the sideline of a round table discussion on the 2008 U.S. Electoral process, organised by the U.S. Embassy.
“Obama is contesting with a serious candidate. All he needs is for all of us to continue to pray for him to emerge as the next U.S. president,’’ he said.
Okoro noted that Obama was contesting with McCain, who had contributed immensely to the development of U.S..
He declared: “We need a vibrant and younger person like Obama to emerge as the president of the U.S. , since he has promised to carry the world along.
“Americans and the world at large also need Obama, as he has promised to bring peace and stability and an end to crisis in the world.’’
The Don noted that Obama’s emergence as a presidential candidate had made blacks all over the world proud.
“Obama has shown that there is something good in blacks. Nigerian politicians have a lot to learn from the transparent process which resulted in his emergence as his party’s candidate.
“The U.S. is like a role model in democracy, so it is important for our politicians and youths to learn from them,” he added.
In a related development, Mr Emmanuel Onuchayo, a PDP chieftain, also told NAN that the zoning system adopted by the party was undemocratic and unconstitutional.
“It is not the answer to the problems facing the country,” he said.
Onuchayo said Nigeria needed the best and most qualified people to lead the country, adding that such people could never emerge from a zoning process.
“Zoning will not allow a complete candidate to emerge, and the party should reconsider its decision on the issue,” he said.
