WARRI— Following the introduction of crash helmet for motorcycle riders in the country, motorcycle riders in Warri, Delta state have complied with the directive.
But it was observed that in some towns like Oghara, headquarters of Ethiope West Local Government Area in the State, the motorcyclists are yet to comply with this directive.
In Warri, the compliance with the directive is one hundred percent, but they have introduced different types of helmet which are mostly of industrial use.
It was also observed that most of the helmets are not for preventive purposes incase of an accident but just for decoration as they are placed on the head to obey the law.
There are cases when the helmet eventually fall off from the passenger’s head.
As for the Motorcycle riders at Express, Oghara Junction, Ogharefe and Oghareki, they were seen carrying passengers without wearing helmet, neither the passengers they carry wearing helmet.
Two of the riders spoken to at Oghara Junction, on why he did not wear an helmet said that he has not bought one, and when asked why he has not acquired one, he said that the price of the helmet which he said is N5,000.00 (Five Thousand Naira) is expensive and out of his reach.
Another rider who was interviewed at Oghareki on why he did not wear an helmet, disclosed that the helmet is expensive and that he has no money to purchase it, he appealed to government to reconsider the helmet issue and scrap it.
Though there were no officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on the road to enforce the wearing of helmet by motorcycle riders popularly known as Okada in some parts of Delta state. The questions being asked by passengers in Oghara, is when will the officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) enforce the wearing of helmet by motorcycle riders and passengers across the state.
