Inter-Marriage Among Youths In Nigeria

With Clementina Oyakhilome

Marriage is the union between a man and a woman. It is an old tradition which has existed till now. It is even said by Christian that what God has joined together let no man put asunder.

Intermarriages are marriages that take place amongst different Clans/Communities; these clans may not have any relationship in their individual traditions and religions.

Some clans in the old till now have been banned from other clans or villages from going into marriages with them, because, they felt they betrayed them to the whites many years ago. When people come into contact with them and discover they are from that clan, they shift very far from them, if they are sitting together. But if their children happen to go into marriages with them, the children are rejected for life, because they are seen as unclean.

Intermarriages are been taking place over the years and it will continue till the end of days. It has brought about the negative and positive way of life to us which cannot be quantified when viewed from both sides.

Intermarriages have brought about unity amongst villages, by virtue of that, they now see themselves as one or as a family. If there use to be war or conflict amongst them, that is set aside and a final settlement takes place for life, this unity has to be a long term unity.

Because of this unity, people have to live amongst each other and by virtue of interactions learning of one another’s culture takes place gradually. These cultures are imbibed from generation to generation. Some of these cultures have both positive and negative side of life to us. If we had not inter mingled intermarriages with the whites our young boys wouldn’t have been plaiting their hairs, nor would our girls be putting on trousers.

Intermarriages have enlightened most of us and have brought about development here and there. In trying to sort for areas for development and to spread the good news of God, many whites penetrated into West Africa and some of them finally settled with our young undefiled girls which they found as suitable wives.

In settling down, they introduced companies and industries which made us great and international business now prospered. For example, from our cocoa, which we produce we export outside the country and get beverages back in return as import. Textiles are imported into the country, we can have the various kinds of cloths we want which was not so those days, we were using leaves as cover.

Intermarriages had brought about a hybrid of children; these children can be of a strong or weak hybrid. That is why children these days grow taller than their parents, eat like glutton, feel that their parents must care for them because they know the law, and are not ready to work hard for tomorrow. Some of them are junk yards. A strong hybrid father might marry a weak hybrid mother and one of their children might always be sick.

This has brought about new technologies in the sense that you now know your status before getting married; no more headaches after marriage except you on your own caused trouble for yourself.
Through intermarriages and strong interactions, most people in the world entirely have been educated.

Hardly before you see anybody that cannot read and write, either in English or in your own dialect because one could read, and write gradually educational institutions were opened, which people went to. At the initial stage, people were begged to go to school and gifts were offered them like peak milk, umbrellas, notebooks and pencils to make them come to school but as soon as they picked interest and over the years, they introduced a small fee.

From small fee, it went to a big fee which people could not bear. Hence, when students of Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma rioted two weeks ago, over hike in school fees.Thank God the school fees has been reduced again.
Intermarriages is all
