LOKOJA - Fifty-five persons were feared dead on Tuesday when a trailer crashed into a market at the Felele area of Lokoja.
Newsmen who visited the scene, reports that more than 30 persons were said to have sustained injuries.
An eyewitness said that the accident could be as a result of brake failure, during which the trailer rammed into 19 other vehicles.
The market which is located on the edge of the ever-busy Lokoja –Okene Road, is believed to be the largest foodstuff market in the state.
The Kogi Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr Yomi Asaniyan, said that 26 corpes had been recovered while the injured had been rushed to some of the hospitals in the town.
He also said that the corpses had been deposited at mortuaries.
Mr Abdulahi Mohammed, the Police Public Relations Officer said that the driver of the vehicle had absconded.
