LAGOS - Mr Adegboyega Adepegba, Director-General, Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN), says the institute will mark its golden jubilee on August 25 with a TV documentary.
Adepegba told newsmen in Lagos that the documentary became necessary because the resolution to form the institute was taken in the afternoon of August 25, 1960.
“It was in the afternoon of August 25, some 50 years ago that a resolution to form a local institute was passed at the Glover Memorial Hall, Customs Street, Lagos.
“At that time it was an affiliate of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London and the decision was taken by people drawn from the insurance industry.
“The pioneers who gave birth to the local institute included J.W. Farnsworth of Guinea Insurance, D.H. Hamilton of New Africa Insurance and E.C. McNestry of Royal Exchange Assurance,” he said.
Adepegba said that the first council of the new body was made up of the steering committee that planned the establishment of the institute.
He named Messrs Talabi A. Braithwaite, Sunny Odogwu, A. Adebayo and F.O. Awosika as members of that council.
According to reports, the CIIN started its 50th anniversary celebration in 2009 with a lecture by the President of Sierra Leone, Mr Ernest Bai Koroma.
Adepegba explained that the celebrations were planned to coincide with the key annual programmes of the institute which ended in June, 2009.
