Man Docked Over Alleged Lottery Scam

LAGOS - The police on Wednesday arraigned a trader, Okechukwu Mba, who allegedly defrauded the public by organising a fake lottery.

Mba, 27, is standing trial before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on charges of advance fee fraud.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Isaac Aminu, told the court that the accused lured the public to participate in a lottery with the promise of rewarding the winners with Nokia handsets.
Aminu said that Mba also printed flyers listing out other prizes to be won by participants in the game.

The prosecutor, however, explained that rather than the Nokia handsets promised winners, the accused packed stones into some cartons to deceive the public.

He said the offence was committed on February 27 on Muritala Muhammed Way, Ebute Meta, Lagos.

Aminu said that the offence contravened sections 240 and 421 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos state.

Mr O. Olatunji, a Senior Magistrate, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety.

The magistrate adjourned the case till March 29 for further hearing.
