WARRI - The Chairman of Sapele Local Government Area, in Delta State , Hon. Godwin Atose, has called on Okpe sons and daughters to inculcate the habit of speaking the language and promoting the culture and values of Okpe Kingdom.
Making this call at the 2008 Okpe day celebration of Okpe students, College of Education, Warri, the Sapele local government chairman said the Okpe’s should rise up to encourage the Okpe ethnic tribe from going into extinction.
He noted that the habit of speaking the Okpe language should be inculcated, to make the Okpe Kingdom move forward.
The chairman commended the Okpe students, at the College of Education, Warri for their patriotism and he enjoined the students to always be united as one family.
In his advice to the students, the chairman of the occasion, Chief P.A Gbinije, said the students should always meet on a regular basis because this will unite the Okpe’s together in the institution.
According to Chief Gbinije, who is the most senior Okakuro (the Okpagha of Okpe Kingdom), it is not encouraging when an event is being held by Okpe students and the turn out of invited Okpe son’s and daughters is low.
The president, National Association of Okpe Student College Education, Warri Chapter, Comrade Enunauye Onajite, commended the effort of those who in one way or the other have contributed their quota to the development of the association and he disclosed that for their contributions so far, the association will give awards to deserving personalities.
“It is note worthy that students are leaders of tomorrow and leadership of tomorrow is greatly determined by studentship of today, hence the nature of studentship of today will necessarily shape the type of leaders of tomorrow. It is therefore absolutely necessary that our students are well oriented and properly aligned with values, norms and ethics that will ensure good citizenship and this task should, however not be left in the hands of the government alone, rather individuals should do their possible best to improve the level of educational advancement in Okpe Kingdom” he said.
A merit award was presented to Hon. Atose by the president of the Okpe Students in recognition as the best local government chairman concerned about education in the Delta state.
