IKEJA - The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested an undergraduate and two others for drug trafficking at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The spokesman of the NDLEA, Ofoyeju Mitchell, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Ikeja.
Ofoyeju said that Quadri Sulaiman, 24, a final year student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, was caught while attempting to board a Virgin Nigeria flight to London.
Mitchell stated that Sulaiman was found to have ingested 93 pieces of substances that tested positive to cocaine, and had so far excreted 92 pieces weighing 1.438 kilogramme.
He added that the suspect was still underobservation until the remaining wrap was excreted.
Sulaiman, who hails from Odogbolu in Ogun State, was said to have disclosed that his parents were based in the US with his siblings.
He added that he was recruited because he had a UK visa and had been traveling to London to spend holidays.
The student, who said that he was paid 500 pounds to take the drugs to London was now said to be regretting his action.
“I am disappointed in myself. I am dumbfounded. I do not need money for anything. I still can’t understand why I am in this mess.
“I pray to God to help me out of this problem”, Sulaiman was quoted as saying.
Other suspects arrested were Bose Ojenabor, 29 and Nnadozie Winston, 44. Ojenabor, a nursing mother with a seven-month-old child, was arrested during the screening of passengers travelling on Air France.
She was said to have inserted a big wrap of cocaine weighing 216 grammes in her private part and ingested 52 pieces of same substance.
The housewife, who is based in Italy, was quoted as saying that it was poverty that forced her into drug trafficking.
“This is my first time; I agreed to carry the drugs for 1000 Euros because I needed a roof over my head and that of my child.
“I am saying sorry to my baby and to my country that I have disappointed them,” Ojenabor said.
Ojenabor, revealed that the drug was given to her in a restaurant at Ojodu Berger, Lagos.
She was also said to have lamented that all her years in Italy had been a waste because the money she reportedly sent to her uncle in Benin was squandered.
Winston, who lives at Ogba, Lagos and hails from Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, was caught on his way to Paris, France with 65 pieces of substances that proved positive for cocaine.
Winston, a father of three, also claimed that this was his first time of trafficking in drugs.
“It is not intentional. This is manipulation because I did not know how I was convinced. I had my own 2,000 Euros with which I wanted to buy fairly used cars from France.
“In fact, my wife felt like tearing me into pieces when she saw me in this condition,” he regretted.
The NDLEA Commander at the airport, Mr. Victor Cole-Showers, said that it was unfortunate for a final year student to indulge in drug trafficking, even when he was being taken care of by his parents.
On the woman with a seven-month-old baby, the commander said “she cannot hide under the cover of a nursing mother to commit such a serious crime”.
Ofoyeju said that efforts were being made to hand over the baby to the father who lives in Benin City, Edo State. All the suspects, he said, would be charged to court accordingly.
