Guinness Nigeria awards scholarship to youths

 

BENIN CITY- About four months after awarding scholarship to four young school leavers from Oregbeni Community, Benin, to study at the Institute for Industrial Technology (IIT), Lagos, Guinness Nigeria Plc has again awarded scholarship to another set of four students from the same Oregbeni Community who are currently studying Engineering in some universities and polytechnics in the country.


The youngsters are among the first beneficiaries of Guinness Nigeria’s Engineering Scholarship Scheme, which the company established for indigenes of its host communities in the country, including Oregbeni Community.


Those who received the scholarship award at a ceremony held in Guinness Nigeria’s Benin Brewery at Ikpoba Hill recently were Mr. Samuel Osemwota, Mr. Donald Ihunoma Igerhienrhien, Miss Vera Nonye Asomugha and Mr. Paul Ohiozoje Isemede.


Speaking at the occasion, the Deputy Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria Plc, Mr. Tunde Savage, said: “the scholarship award is a clear demonstration of our unwavering commitment to the empowerment of the youth, who are tomorrow’s leaders and who will in future be the shining light of their various communities.”


Mr. Savage, who was represented at the ceremony by Mr. Cephas Afebuameh, Acting Plant Manager Guinness Nigeria Plc, Benin Brewery, also enjoined the scholarship beneficiaries to make effective use of the opportunity being given to them for the successful launch of their careers.


He said that the Engineering Scholarship scheme fitted into the company’s approach to corporate citizenship, which emphasized building very cordial relations with, and commitment to the development of the company’s host communities.


He said a total of 24 students were planned to benefit from the scholarship scheme annually throughout the duration of their course of study.


He commended the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), who are the administrators of the scheme, for partnering with the company to realise this noble initiatives.


It will be recalled that few months ago, apart from the IIT scholarship award, Guinness Nigeria Plc also completed and commissioned Igiesota Road within the Oregbeni Community, complete with side drains.


Other areas where the company has impacted positively on the community according to Mr. Savage included the provision of potable water under its Water of Life programme, extension of water from its Benin Brewery to residents in the immediate environs of the brewery, current renovation of Oregbeni Primary School and employment of skilled and unskilled manpower from the community.
