NEMA Trains Personnel On Use Of Rescue Boats

LAGOS - To ensure quick response to emergencies on the lagoons, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has commenced training of personnel in the South-West.

The South-West Coordinator of the agency, Mr Mike Adeyanju, told newsmen in Lagos that the training was aimed at ensuring safety of lives and property.

‘’In the course of our assignments, we have had problems accessing some remote and riverine parts of the zone whenever there was an emergency.

“With the procurement of some boats, we embarked on the training of all personnel in the zone on management and swift response to such emergencies,’’ he said.

The NEMA official decried those occasions where people had had to lose their lives due to slow emergency response.

‘’If we had these boats sometime ago when people were trapped afloat in Epe, we would have saved the peoples’ agony,’’ he said.

Adeyanju said the agency had made the training mandatory for all workers because they were expected to rescue people during emergencies.

The coordinator said the agency was prepared to respond to disasters along riverine areas.
He gave assurance that through the use of rubber dingee boats, emergencies along the communities would be properly managed.

“We cannot continue to lose people through our negligence and inactions during emergencies.

“Issues of emergency management in riverine areas has become of utmost concern to NEMA,’’ he stressed.

Adeyanju urged communities along the lagoons and creeks to report promptly any emergency around them.
