BENIN CITY -The members of the Police Service Commission, led by the Chairman, DIG Parry Osayande (Rtd), yesterday paid a visit to the Oba of Benin, with a promise to reposition the Nigeria Police for better service to the people.
DIG Osayande informed the Oba that the Commission was on a three-day working tour of Edo State on a damage and control management mission of the Nigeria Police.
He said the Commission had four and a half years to reposition the Nigeria Police to a force that the citizens would be proud of and that the commission would not entertain the situation of the police being servants to the political bigwigs in the society, thereby jettisoning their responsibility to the people.
DIG Osayande explained that the duty of the Commission was to see to the appointment of policemen from the rank of constable to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police, the promotion of deserving officers and the general discipline in the Nigeria Police.
He said that apart from maintaining law and order, the objective of the Commission was to have a corruption-free Nigeria Police.
He then appealed to the Oba to assist the Commission by talking to the enigie, edionwere, chiefs and community leaders for them to know that what was happening to the police, adding that the commission would do its best to ensure that the country got a people-oriented Nigeria Police.
Responding, the Esogban of Benin, Chief David Edibiri, commended the members and Chairman of the Commission for
regularising the rapid promotion of some police officers recently and enjoined them to carryout their job diligently.
The Benin Monarch, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba NEdo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa, also commended the chairman and members of the commission but frowned at the embarrassing situation of the police collecting
N20 from civilians.
He, however, added that they would do their best to see to it that the police were well taken care of.
