CALABAR - The Task Force on Monitoring of Petroleum Products Distribution in Cross River has declared war against street hawking of petrol, promising to flush them out in one week.
The Chairman of the Task Force, Mr. Kasmir Obock, told newsmen in Calabar that the petroleum products hawkers were “security risk” that the government would not tolerate.
He said that the security unit of the task force had been directed to flush out the hawkers and ensure that they did not return to the streets again.
The task force chairman said there was no scarcity of petroleum products, especially petrol, in the state and wondered why street trading in petrol was beginning to flourish in Calabar.
“We see these roadside hawkers of petrol as people who are up to something; people who want to give the state a bad image and we want to deal with them as a security matter.
“I have directed the security unit of the task force to go all out and flush out the hawkers because we see them as hoodlums, who may be up to something untoward,’’ Obock said.
He also warned oil marketers in the state against adulteration of petroleum products, and said measures had been taken to ensure constant availability of the products around the state.
He said the task force had received assurances from authorities at the fuel depot in Calabar that enough stock would be available, particularly during the tourism surge expected to begin next month.
