IKEJA - Mr. Sina Ogunkoya, Chairman, Committee on Environment, Lagos State House of Assembly has called on residents to assist the state government in clearing all filt removed from the drains to stop it from being washed back in to the drainage.
Ogunkoya made the call in an interview with newsmen on Sunday.
He said that dirt and sand left at the nose of drains if not cleared, usually find its way back into the drainage after rainfall, “thereby frustrating the effort of unblocking the drains“.
The lawmaker said that the residents had a responsibility to assist the state government in its effort to combat flooding.
“Areas must be identified where the silts can be deposited in various communities. It is everybody’s responsibility to keep the environment clean. It should be a collaborative effort between communities, the LG and the state to ensure a clean environment,“ he said.
He also called on local governments to assist communities to remove the silts.
Reports say that dirt and sand can be seen deposited at the nose of drains in Ojodu, Ketu, Iganmu and other local governments in the state.
