ILORIN - Chief Theophilus Bamigboye, the Governorship Candidate of the Accord Party in Kwara in the 2007 general elections, defected to the PDP on Sunday.
Bamigboye, a retired Colonel and former Military Administrator in Bauchi and Osun States announced his defection on Sunday in Ilorin, shortly after meeting with Governors Bukola Saraki of Kwara, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun and the Waziri of Ilorin, Dr Abubakar Saraki.
Speaking after the meeting which took place at the Ilofa residence of the Waziri of Ilorin, Bamigboye promised to contribute his quota to the success of the party in future elections.
He said this would be done by mobilising other opposition members in the state to join the PDP.
Oyinlola described the Waziri of Ilorin as a visionary leader who had played pivotal role in the sustenance of democracy in the country, commending Gov. Saraki and the Waziri of Ilorin for accepting Bamigboye into the party.
Saraki, who was Senate Leader in the second republic, called on the Federal and State Governments to find lasting solution to the high rate of poverty in the country.
He said it was the responsibility of the government to alleviate the suffering of the masses.
“Nigeria has a vast land which could be cultivated to produce more food for the people. It therefore, behooves the government to work out ways of tackling the problems once and for all,’’ he said
On the rotation of the Presidency, Saraki said that based on the agreement reached at the constitutional conference, it was the right of the North to rule the country for eight years before switching it back to the South.
He said that political leaders should always endeavour to live by their words and fulfill their promises to the electorate, pointing out that the current ruling of the country by a President from the North should not be an issue of controversy.
