Lawmaker defends motions

BENIN CITY – One time Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and presently Chairman, House Committee on Works and Transport, Hon. (Prince) Fred Omoigberai, has declared that his motions on the floor of the House are targeted at good governance, order, peace and general development of Edo State, and not at certain individuals.

In a press release signed by Rt. Hon. Fred Omoigberai, following the several commendations and bashings alike over his motions on the floor of the House, he said his motions were always popular and thoroughly canvassed with colleagues before they were passed.

While noting that the House of Assembly was an independent, arm of government accountable mainly to the good people of Edo State who gave members the mandate, he declared that for instance, the motion on the purchase of caterpillars or earth moving machineries by the local government councils in Edo State, stated categorically that local council chairmen should not buy the equipment if the equipment were not captured in their year 2008 budgetary or supplementary approvals.

He explained that there was no outright ban on the local government councils not to buy the caterpillars or earth moving equipment.

“The second leg of the motion also advised them to tie the council funds to projects that have direct bearing on the electorate which will be verified by the House of Assembly which has the inherent jurisdiction and power over them,” he said.

“Another motion calling for the release of excess crude oil funds to local government councils was done in public interest which had no pecuniary benefit either accruing to me or my very distinguished colleagues.”

“The third motion asking the state Commissioner of Police to rise to the security challenges of Edo State is timely following the spate of killings across Edo State”, he further added.

He stated that the leadership and members recently donated a brand new Hilux Jeep to the state Commissioner of Police to demonstrate their commitment to fight crime.

Hon. Omoigberai noted that Edo State Governor Oserheimen Osunbor also donated an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) and many Hilux jeeps to the Police force also within the same week. The lawmaker declared that the people of Edo State would continue to enjoy good governance as they keep faith with the present administration.
