Yar’Adua to address 63rd UN General Assembly

 

UNITED NATIONS- President Umaru Yar’Adua will on Wednesday, September 24, address the 63rd plenary session of the UN General Assembly in New York, according to a UN schedule.


The schedule, which was made available to newsmen at the weekend in New York, listed Yar’Adua as the lead speaker at the Assembly’s afternoon session on September 24.


He will deliver his speech before a gathering of world leaders and observers at 3 p.m. (New York time), which will be 8 p.m. Nigerian time.


Yar’Adua is expected to speak on issues affecting Africa, as well as other global matters, including climate change, developmental issues, peace keeping and security.


A diplomatic source told newsmen that the Nigerian leader is scheduled to arrive New York this weekend and is scheduled to hold bilateral and multilateral talks with some world leaders and prominent personalities on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.


It was learnt that Yar’Adua will also participate in the high-Level meetings on Africa’s development issues and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on September 22 and September 26.


The meetings were convened by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the incoming President of the 63rd UN General Assembly, Fr. Miguel Brockmann of the Republic of Nicaragua to review progress and challenges facing Africa and the MDGs.
