Ijaw Youths Shelve Planned Protest

YENAGOA - The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has shelved its planned protest, scheduled to take place on Monday against the Bayelsa Government.

The IYC Secretary General, Mr. Udengs Eradiri, said this in an interview with newsmen.

According to him, the IYC, during a consultative meeting held on Sunday, shelved the plan.

Eradiri said the protest was suspended because people had begun to misinterpret it by making political conclusions.

The protest, he said, was hinged on the lack of employment for youths, as well as the poor security situation.

According to him, the meeting resolved that the planned Youths Mass Job Rally scheduled for today be suspended.

He said the congress constituted an eight-member committee with a mandate to liaise with the government to create employment for the youth.

Eradiri said the eight-man committee would meet with the ministries with a view to quicken the processes that would employ the youth.

The committee which has two weeks to submit its reports has Dens Eradiri as Chairman and Owoupele Perekeme as Secretary.

Anti riot policemen were seen patrolling major roads of Yenagoa while some were stationed at strategic locations in anticipation of the protest.
