NUC strives to contain fake varsity transcripts, cultism

By CLIFFORD AGBAJOR

ABUJA- The National Universities Commission (NUC) says it plans to role out an online data base system to curtail cases of transcripts forgery and other malpractice.

“We are in the process of endorsing a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with a private company that is willing to partner with us to role out the data base system,’’ NUC Executive Secretary, Julius Okojie said yesterday.

Okojie was speaking at a workshop on the data base project in Abuja .

He said the data base would provide information about students, universities and staff, through electric and bio metric means.

“The data base will reduce cases of individuals carrying false certificates and delay in admitting Nigerian students to schools abroad because they can now access their transcripts through the system.

“It will also provide analysis, reports and other valuable information to government
planning agencies by allowing accredited third parties to access the system and pull information relevant to their needs,’’ Okojie said.

He said the NUC was mindful of previous futile attempts to implement similar projects.

“The NUC is not unmindful of previous attempts to implement the Nigerian Universities Management Information System (NUMIS) and the Nigerian Universities Network (NUNet).

“We are resolved to ensure that the data base project will stand the test of time because of its public/private partnership.

“The involvement of stakeholders, through this workshop, is one of the strategies to ensure implementation and sustenance of the project,’’ Okojie said.

Also speaking, Dr Igwe Aja-Nwachukwu, the Minister of Education, commended NUC for the initiative but asked the commission to be wary of hackers.

“I want to advise you to be wary of hackers who evolve different strategies to get into systems.

“There is no doubt that the increased sophistication of cyber crimes is a source of concern to all,” Aja-Nwachukwu said.
