FRSC Launches Rivers Road Safety Corridor

By HAMEED BRAIMAH

PORT HARCOURT - The Rivers State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) says it has commenced the segmentation of roads into traffic zones in Port Harcourt for the effective management of traffic in the metropolis.

The State Sector Commander Mr. Osas Osadebamwen stated this on Monday when he played host to a delegation of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) 2009 Press Week Organising Committee in his office.

Mr. Osadebamwen said the programme code named “Rivers Road Safety Corridor” was the commission’s own response to the negative attitude of the motoring public in Port Harcourt which according to him had developed a culture of not obeying traffic rules.

This type of attitude he lamented was directly responsible for the unpleasant and chaotic traffic situation in the city of Port Harcourt , stressing that his men were on ground to ensure strict compliance.

The Rivers Road Safety Corridor Mr. Osadebamwen noted, is targeted also at ensuring the availability of Road Signs and functioning Traffic Lights in the city, stressing that his command had already drawn the attention of the Rivers State Government to the none availability of these vital facilities on Port Harcourt Roads and where there are, some times they are not functional.

The sector commander said the idea of the programme for which he solicited the cooperation of the media and the various stakeholders to ensure its success was to ensure strict compliance and observation of traffic rules.

He said the command has already commenced the implementation of the programme on Aba Road Port Harcourt just as he appealed to the motoring public to observe traffic rules and by so doing contribute to the efforts at ridding Port Harcourt of the present menace of traffic jams.

The sector commander assured the press week committee of his command’s preparedness to give them all the supports required of it.

The Chairman of the NUJ 2009 Press Week Mr. Vincent Needom had earlier solicited for the coverage of the Procession of Journalists billed for Friday November 20th 2009 as part of activities making this year’s press week.
