Cranes Players ‘ll Be Retained - Coach

KAMPALA - Uganda Cranes coach Robert Williamson has dismissed the idea of disbanding the entire team following their elimination from 2010 World Cup\Africa Cup of Nation over the weekend.

The Scotsman was answering questions at a press conference after Cranes had beaten Benin 2-1 at Mandela Namboole Stadium.

“We need changes to the side but overhauling the entire side is not the solution. Most of the players are still useful and the best around at the moment,” he said.

He explained further: “We only have to go back to grassroots and tap players and as well as improving the level of coaching. The changes will have to be ‘gradual and not sudden.”

He consoled the fans who have given the team support and urged them for more support and praised his players in particular skipper Ibrahim Sekagya for his mature way of approaching the game.
“He has leadership qualities and he is a mature player. So we cannot just drop such player,” he concluded.

Uganda will host the forthcoming Cecafa senior Challenge Cup and it will be a perfect opportunity for Williamson to field entire side of local-based players as pros will not be available.

The coach will sit down with Fufa technical committee for a post mortem on the qualifiers as well as mapping out strategy for Cecafa tournament.
