EKPOMA-Victims of rainstorm disaster in Esan West and Central Local Government Areas of Edo State have received another set of relief materials worth millions of naira.
The relief materials, which include bags of cement, bundles of roofing sheets, wood, nails, rice, beans, and other materials, were provide by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), following a motion raised on the floor of the National Assembly, by the member representing Esan Central, West and Igueben Federal Constituency, Hon. Patrick Ikhariale.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, constituency’s representative at the Federal House of Representative, Hon. Ikhariale, who previously donated the sum of N500, 000 to the rainstorm victims of both local governments, expressed gratitude to God for bringing to fruition, his efforts to ameliorate the plight of his people, through legislation.
While urging the people to see his actions as a measure of the vigour with which he intends to pursue matters that affect them, he thanked the Director General of NEMA and the Zonal Director in Port-Harcourt for their prompt response to his distress call.
He revealed that he has liased with NEMA to train and equip at least 10 volunteers per ward in his constituency as disasters response corps in collaboration with the local government councils within the first week of October, 2008, just as he also disclosed that he has succeeded in getting some projects in the constituency approved in the NDDC 2008 budget.
Some of the projects he said, include Urohi-Uhiele-Ujogba Road, Irrua-Usugbemu-Ugbegun Road, Irrua-Opoji-Ikinago Road, Ewossa township Roads, Udo Electrification, equipment of Primary Health Centres across the constituency, among others.
The south-south director of NEMA, Mr. Benjamin Oghenah commended the councils for the prompt distribution of the relief materials, and told the victims that the materials were meant to assist them get out of the predicaments they were placed by the rainstorm disaster.
The Esan West Local Government chairman, Hon. Felix Akhabue expressed appreciation to federal agency for responding to the distress call and called on corporate bodies and public-spirited individuals to come to the aid of the victims “as government cannot do it alone”.
He recalled that the council, as a palliative measure to the amelioration the sufferings of the victims, had distributed some relief materials which he said included: bundles of roofing sheets, nails, wood, buckets, mats, blankets and others.
Some of the recipients of the materials were full of thanks for the rep member, NEMA and local government for alleviating their sufferings.
