Panel On Akwa Ibom Airport Promises Fair Hearing

UYO - The Akwa Ibom Airport Commission of Inquiry said it would give fair hearing to all willing to testify on the matter.

The commission’s Chairman, Justice Ime Umana, made the pledge in Uyo at the inaugural sitting of the panel.

He promised a speedy discharge of all matters before the panel.

Umana, who said the panel had five weeks to submit its report, urged those concerned to submit their memoranda and be ready to defend them.

He said the panel would keep to its terms of reference, including examining the process leading to the appointment of DynCorp International LLC as Project Managers.

Umana said the panel would examine the immediate and remote causes of the withdrawal of DynCorp.

The chairman also said the panel had responsibility to establish the roles of all involved in the contract and make appropriate recommendations.

Chief Francis Bassey of Amamon Okobo, one of the host communities of the airport project, said his community had submitted memorandum and would testify orally.

Mr. James Essien, counsel to one of the contractors involved in the project, requested for a date to enable him to submit a written response to memoranda concerning his client.

Report says that work on the airport project started by the Victor Attah administration had stopped following the withdrawal of DynCorp.

The state government, which accused DynCorp of tax evasion and incompetence, set up the panel.
