Lawmakers Condemn Innocent Killings In Edo

By FRIDAY OBANOR

BENIN CITY - The Chairman, Edo State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Security, Hon. Bright Osayande has condemned the extra judicial killing of Mr. Ebenezer Aisien who was allegedly shot dead by a trigger – happy Mobile Police man attached to the NNPC Mega filling station in Benin City–– on Monday this week.

Addressing newsmen during a press briefing in his office on Wednesday, the lawmaker stated that the incessant killing incidents of innocent citizens of the state in recent times is becoming most embarrassing to law abiding citizens of Edo State.

Hon Bright Osayande who was particular about the Mega station incident hinted that the duty of the Police was to protect lives and property of innocent citizens of the state and not to kill.

While calling on the men of the state Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) to be careful in areas of the use of weapon, the lawmaker also advocated for proper dress code for the squad so it could not be mistaken for cult boys that terrorize educational institutions.

According to him, “sometimes one finds it difficult to really distinguish between this supposed law enforcement officers and touts as most times some of them are reportedly recruited to beat up innocent persons for ransom”.

“This is a clear abuse of power of office, wanton disregard of the rule of law as enshrined in our constitution, as well as betrayal of the original purpose why the police force was established.” He said.

Hon. Osayande, therefore stated that there was need for an urgent response at checking the excesses of these trigger-happy Police officers so as to save the citizenry from doubting the integrity and confidentiality of law enforcement agents.

It would be recalled that a 34-year-old man, Mr. Ebenezer Aisien was on Monday this week shot dead at the Benin branch of the NNPC Mega filling station, by a trigger-happy Mobile Police man attached to the station while trying to purchase kerosene from the depot.
