Jos - The League for Human Rights yesterday called on the National Assembly to determine whether UME or post-UME qualified candidates for university admission.
A statement signed by the league’s acting Director, Mr Shamaki Gad-Peters, in Jos alleged that many universities used the post-UME to make money.
“If the government no longer has confidence in the credibility of UME as being conducted by JAMB, then the board should be scrapped,”the league added.
He said that while it was true that the conduct of JAMB examinations left much to be desired, it was also true that the “so-called post-UME has not faired any better”.
“What the universities are interested in is the money which none of them is accounting for.
“It has been said that most universities now bring down their cut-off point to 170 in order to allow more candidates to sit and pay for post-UME,”Gad-Peters added.
According to him, many universities do not have the capacity to even accommodate candidates who selected them as first choice but go ahead to invite those that made them second choice just to make money.
He argued that the situation created double burden for candidates who went through the rigour of JAMB examinations and the post-UME at the universities.
Gad-Peters said the league was concerned about the lack of transparency in the conduct of the post-UME because the results were not usually published.
“So how do we know that the purportedly successful candidates are the very best,” he queried.
He said the present system where universities collected money from thousands of candidates only to admit a privileged few was unacceptable.
