NASS Moves Against Cyber Crimes

ABUJA - Speaker, House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole has assured Nigerians that the parliament would legislate against cyber crimes. Bankole stated this in Abuja while declaring open a two-day capacity building retreat organised by Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (CAMS) Caucus including some members of National Assembly.

Represented by the House Leader, Tunde Akogun, the Speaker said the timing of the retreat was quite apt as the lawmakers were in the process of fine tuning all the anti-graft laws, to make them relevant and effective.

He said to fight against all forms of crimes, all hands must be on deck as “everyone is a stakeholder in this war against crimes, not only government”.

The Speaker noted with satisfaction various activities of the country’s anti-graft agencies in tackling the issue of corruption, money laundering and cyber crime.

Bankole said the effects of the crimes in the society was much and could jeopardise all the seven-point agenda of the present administration, if not curtailed.

The Coordinator of the caucus, Rep. Bassey Etim said its objective was to complement other private initiatives aimed at reducing all forms of crimes in the country.

Etim said over 70 countries, including Nigeria, were working against money laundering, adding that effective legislation must be enacted to combat it.

Delivering a keynote address, Mr. Emmanuel Akomaye, secretary of EFCC, said the focus of the commission was to retrieve the stolen money and pay into the coffers of the government.

Akomaye said it was to facilitate the recovery of the stolen money that the commission initiated a bill aimed at recovery and forfeiture of the stolen property to government.
