Tella’s Wife Sad Over Eaglets Loss

Lagos - The wife of late Yemi Tella, Chief Coach of the 2007 victorious Golden Eaglets, Modupe Tella, yesterday expressed regrets at the ouster of Nigeria from the African Under-17 championship.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Benin Republic on Sunday ousted the world and African champions from the continental competition 3-0.

Nigeria will not go to Algeria in January to defend the African title following Sunday’s defeat in Cotonou.

In a telephone interview with NAN yesterday in Lagos, Modupe said it was annoying that the Eaglets lost by such a wide margin.

“I watched the match on television and I was disgusted seeing the players play so badly on Sunday.”
She wondered how the Nigerian team played without zeal to surrender the title her husband and his boys laboured to win last year for Nigeria in Lome in 2007.

“It is painful that just a year after the Eaglets won the World Cup in Korea Republic the national team failed to impress,” she added.

Tella urged the NFF to do something urgently to change the team’s declining fortunes before the 2009 World Cup to be hosted by Nigeria.
