BUSAN - Nigeria will participate for the first time in World Thai boxing tournament at the 4th TAFISA World Sports for All Games in Busan, South Korea.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Thai boxing is a form of boxing practiced in Thailand, using gloved fists, feet, knees and elbows.
Okechukwu Eluagu, Secretary, Thaiboxing Federation of Nigeria (TFN), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Monday in Lagos that the tournament would hold from Sept. 26 to Oct. 2.
Eluagu said the country’s contingent, to be led by Anambra Commissioner for Sports, Elsie Ikemefuna, comprises 12 Thai boxers and four officials.
He said the athletes were selected during the two national open championships organised by TFN in February and June this year at the National Stadium, Lagos.
“The federation has been looking for an opportunity to participate in a world championship to showcase our talent in the sport.
“We will use the championship to expose our Thai boxers, acquire professional skills and update ourselves with the current rules and techniques of the game,” he said.
Eluagu said the choice of Ikemefuna to lead the delegation was because of her immense contributions to the development of the sport in the country.
He disclosed that the trip was being sponsored by the Anambra government, adding that all arrangements for the trip had been concluded.
The TFN scribe said the contingent would depart the country on Sept. 22 for South Korea. (NAN)
