Rivers Probes Cheating At Unity Games

PORT HARCOURT - Allegations that some Rivers local governments have fielded elite athletes and mercenaries at the ongoing sports festival are under investigation, says Mr Daobu Harry, the Director of Sports.

Harry, who is also the Co-ordinator of the festival’s Main Organising Committee, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) today in Port Harcourt that the committee had received petitions on the allegations.

“Specifically, we have received reports of using elite athletes and the use of mercenaries by some local governments at the Unity Games. We have commenced investigations on the petitions,” he said.

Harry said any local government found guilty of cheating after investigations would be punished according to the festival’s rules and regulations.

He said athletics and judo were the events mentioned by the petitioners.

“We are serious about this matter and will get to the root of it. We cannot disclose the names of the affected local governments now until we conclude investigations,’’ the director added.
